Quick answer
Friend list or Join Code. One host-owned save.
Step zero
Pick the host who will actually be there.
The host automatically saves the entire world and must start first next time. When the host ends a session, everyone else disconnects.
Illustrated guide
How to host
Create new or continue the host’s save.
Use the minimum stable attendance.
Protect the session before sharing.
The host character must finish loading.
Use the current Session Details code.
Two ways in
Join from friends—or use the current code.
Platform friends
- Add the host on the same platform service.
- Look for active friend games.
- Select the host after they enter the world.
- If it does not appear, use a Join Code.
Join Code
- Ask for the code from this session.
- Enter the short unique code in the join flow.
- Enter the password if the host set one.
- Request a fresh code after a new session starts.
Mac App Store players use Join Codes because that version does not support a Game Center friend-games list.
Crossplay
Different systems, same island.
When platform friend lists do not overlap, use the Join Code. Crossplay does not automatically prove cross-progression, account syncing, or save transfer—those remain separate questions.
Returning later
The host opens; everyone else rejoins.
- 1The original host opens the saved journey.
- 2The host selects the world version for that session.
- 3The host enters the world and receives a fresh Join Code.
- 4Friends join from the active list or with the new code.
2 vs 3 vs 4+
Minimum challenge version—not a room cap.
Best if only two players can stay for the full session.
Choose only if three players remain available.
The world may ask more of the group; total lobby maximum is still 12.
Session privacy
Do not broadcast the key to the door.
A session can be visible to friends of participating players, and anyone with the current code can attempt to join. Set a password, share both privately, and cover them while streaming or taking screenshots. The host can change the password under Session Details while playing.
Can’t connect?
Check these in order.
- Host is fully in the world
Wait until their character has loaded.
- Use the current code
Codes regenerate when a new host session starts.
- Check clocks and network
An inaccurate system clock can block hosting and joining.
- Compare version numbers
The first two parts must match; the third may differ.
- Restart completely
Close Big Walk on host and guests, reopen, and try again.
