60-second triage
Update, check the clock, then restart cleanly.
- 1Install the newest available Big Walk update.
- 2Make sure the host is loaded into the world and sharing a fresh code.
- 3Set every device clock to automatic and confirm internet access.
- 4Close Big Walk completely on every device, reopen, and try once more.
Steam 1.4.8 •
What version 1.4.8 changed.
House House’s first post-launch patch targets microphones that stayed too quiet even when players were close. It also changes how microphone volume calibrates; a new player may need to keep talking for a few seconds before the level settles.
Can’t join or host
Work from session state outward.
- Host must be in the world
Wait until the host character finishes loading. Check any connection warning in the lower-left corner.
- Use this session’s code
Join Codes regenerate whenever the host starts a new session. Confirm the password separately.
- Correct the system clock
A clock that differs significantly from online time can block both hosting and joining.
- Compare version numbers
The first two numbers must match. The third number may differ.
- Restart everyone
Fully quit—not just suspend—the game on host and guests before retrying.
If the friend game never appears, add the host on the same platform service or skip the list and use a Join Code. Mac App Store players must use a code.
Voice and audio
Match the symptom to the check.
| Symptom | Check first | Then try |
|---|---|---|
| Nobody hears you | Settings → Audio → Microphone Activity | Physical mute, Mute Mode=Hold, moderation silencing, OS permission |
| Voices too quiet | Install the newest platform update | Steam 1.4.8; elsewhere use the latest offered build, speak for several seconds, then move closer |
| Echo or doubled voices | Mute players one at a time | Find the feedback loop, use headphones, mute when not speaking |
| PS5 voice missing | PS Button → Sound | Turn off “Mute Game Voice Chat” |
| macOS mic blocked | Privacy & Security → Microphone | Enable Big Walk, then restart it |
Low FPS, jitter, missing world
Separate graphics load from network load.
Game runs slowly
- Lower Render Scale.
- Lower the Quality setting.
- Raise Render Scale gradually until balanced.
- Update graphics drivers if world elements—such as the ocean—are missing.
Players jitter or drop out
- Close network-heavy apps and devices.
- Move closer to Wi-Fi or use Ethernet.
- Check the host’s network and framerate first.
- Try a better-connected host for a new journey if needed.
Controller problems
Remove conflicts before changing profiles.
- Test the controller outside Big Walk: confirm buttons and axes register.
- Disconnect other peripherals: another device may be taking input priority.
- Mac + Xbox wireless: prefer Bluetooth rather than direct USB-C.
- macOS compatibility: create a Steam controller profile, enable Increase compatibility, allow Steam under Accessibility and Input Monitoring, and enable Steam Input.
- Rebind in game: use
Settings → Rebindingafter the controller is detected.
Quick answers
Troubleshooting FAQ
Why can’t I join a Big Walk game?
First confirm the host is fully loaded into the world, use the Join Code from the current session, check every device’s internet connection and system clock, compare the first two version numbers, then fully restart the game on host and guests.
Why are voices too quiet?
Install the newest update offered on your platform. Steam version 1.4.8 improves nearby volume and calibration; the same fix was still rolling out elsewhere when checked. New players may need to speak continuously for a few seconds while calibration settles. Distance fading remains intentional.
Why can nobody hear my microphone?
Open Settings > Audio and watch Microphone Activity. Check the physical mute switch, Mute Mode, moderation silencing, operating-system permissions, and whether the microphone works in another app.
Can a slow host make everyone lag?
Yes. Official troubleshooting says a host’s low framerate can contribute to networking problems. Ask the host to lower graphics settings or let a better-connected player host a new world.
